CONSUMER HEALTH INFORMATION

This collection of links is primarily for the benefit of visitors to this site who are not employed in the medical profession. No attempt has been made to create a comprehensive list of medical web sites available on the World Wide Web. Instead, this page is meant to be used as a starting point for those searching for information on particular subjects. The links are arranged into categories: General, Instructional and Other. Within each category, links may be subgrouped, then arranged alphabetically. Site descriptions were taken from the web sites themselves -- in most cases.

There are three web sites, in particular, that should be given top consideration as sources for medical information:

MEDLINEplus

...is "a goldmine of good health information from the world's largest medical library, the National Library of Medicine. Health professionals and consumers alike can depend on it for information that is authoritative and up to date. MEDLINEplus has extensive information from the National Institutes of Health and other trusted sources on over 600 diseases and conditions. There are also lists of hospitals and physicians, a medical encyclopedia and a medical dictionary, health information in Spanish, extensive information on prescription and nonprescription drugs, health information from the media, and links to thousands of clinical trials.

MEDLINEplus is updated daily. There is no advertising on this site, nor does MEDLINEplus endorse any company or product."

PubMed

..."available via the NCBI Entrez retrieval system, was developed by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) at the National Library of Medicine (NLM), located at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Entrez is the text based search and retrieval system used at NCBI for all major databases including PubMed, Nucleotide, and Protein Sequences, Protein Structures, Complete Genomes, Taxonomy, OMIM and many others. PubMed was designed to provide access to citations from biomedical literature. Subsequently, a linking feature LinkOut, was added to provide access to full-text articles at journal web sites, and other related web resources. PubMed also provides access and links to the other Entrez molecular biology databases.

Publishers participating in PubMed electronically submit their citations to NCBI prior to or at the time of publication. If the publisher has a web site that offers full-text of its journals, PubMed provides links to that site, as well as, biological databases, consumer health information, research tools, and more. There may be a charge to access the text or information.

PubMed provides access to bibliographic information which includes MEDLINE, (which) is the NLM's premier bibliographic database covering the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, and the preclinical sciences. MEDLINE contains bibliographic citations and author abstracts from more than 4,600 biomedical journals published in the United States and 70 other countries. The file contains over 11 million citations dating back to the mid-1960's."

"Since 1991 the Library has served as the Regional Medical Library for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, South Central Region, with responsibility for the library needs of health professionals in the 5 state region of Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Texas. So designated by the National Library of Medicine, there are only eight Regional Medical Libraries in the nation.

The Library serves as the Regional Medical Library (RML) for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine South Central Region (NN/LM SCR); one of eight RMLs in the US. This designation has been retained by the Library via a competitive process through the National Library of Medicine, since 1991. The mission of the NN/LM SCR is to provide all health professionals with equal access to biomedical information and to improve the public's access to information to enable them to make informed decisions about their health in the five state region of Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas."

The MAC-TMC Library Consumer Health links page is very comprehensive, though weighted to Houston and/or Texas sites.

"The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons provides education and practice management services for orthopaedic surgeons and allied health professionals. The Academy also serves as an advocate for improved patient care and informs the public about the science of orthopaedics. Founded at Northwestern University as a not-for-profit organization in 1933, the Academy has grown from a small organization serving less than 500 members to the world's largest medical association of musculoskeletal specialists. The Academy now serves about 24,000 members internationally.

Members of the Academy, called fellows, are orthopaedists concerned with the diagnosis, care, and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders. The orthopaedist's scope of practice includes disorders of the body's bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons. Fellows have completed four years of medical school and at least five years of an approved "residency" in orthopaedics.

In addition, they must pass a comprehensive oral and written examination, be certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, and submit to stringent membership review processes prior to admittance to the Academy."

The Patient Education portion of the site has numerous Fact Sheets and Brochures.
